Portugal · Version 1
1941–1958The notice records that the first edition of Amorim Girão’s Atlas of Portugal, published in 1941 to commemorate the double centenary of Portugal’s foundation and restoration, had sold out. While introducing plans for a new edition, the author recalls that the first edition had sought to present a vivid, colourful image of the country.

The article outlines plans for the second edition of Amorim Girão’s Atlas of Portugal, conceived as a substantial revision of the 1941 commemorative edition. Adopting a historical-geographical framework, the new atlas will portray metropolitan Portugal and its overseas territories as an interconnected whole. Three introductory historical maps will explain Portugal’s formation, its global expansion, and the contemporary distribution of Portugal and Portuguese communities worldwide. Thematic maps will also present demographic, agricultural, and economic data, partly in response to growing international demand for visual information about the country. Because some official materials remain unavailable, the maps may be issued progressively in numbered series. Each will include concise commentary in Portuguese and English. The project ultimately seeks to create a coherent national atlas that supports domestic understanding while promoting Portugal’s image abroad.
