This review evaluates the first installment of the Atlas of the Republic of Austria, a six-part cartographic project edited by the Austrian Academy of Sciences under Hans Bobek. Designed to depict Austria’s natural foundations, historical development, population, economy, settlement, administration, and cultural landscape, the atlas combines main maps with thematic insets using dot maps, area cartograms, and diagrams. The reviewer praises its scientific reliability, municipal-level precision, clear design, documented sources, and usefulness for public authorities and students. Particularly notable are the detailed maps of Vienna’s built environment and housing structure, the innovative tourism cartodiagram distinguishing seasonal patterns and travel types, and the municipal map of the 1959 national election, which enables comparison with religious distributions. Adding a transparent municipal-boundary overlay is recommended. Overall, the installment demonstrates the atlas’s substantial analytical and practical value.
