The article outlines the background, design, and organisation of Sweden’s new national atlas. Its predecessor, Atlas över Sverige, was produced between 1953 and 1971 and contained about 600 thematic maps. Structural change, scientific advances, and the exhaustion of the first edition prompted renewed planning in the 1980s; in 1987 Parliament approved SEK 40 million for a ten-year project. The new atlas was planned as approximately seventeen separately issued thematic volumes, followed by a condensed school atlas, with Swedish- and English-language editions. It would use computer-based cartography, support revision through a national atlas database, and potentially appear in a digital version for personal computers. The National Land Survey, Statistics Sweden, and the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography jointly governed the project, whose central editorial office was based at Stockholm University. Manuscript preparation was decentralised among institutions across Sweden, while the Land Survey’s Kiruna unit would undertake prepress production. As of October 1988, manuscripts for the first four volumes were in preparation and the remaining volumes were at the synopsis stage; publication of the first volume was scheduled for April 1990.
