Sweden’s Atlas över Sverige was issued from 1953 to 1971 under the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography. Magnus Lundqvist’s 1953 account traces the project’s revival to 1940, his detailed proposal to 1943, and the start of work to 1945, with public and private funding and collaboration from scientific and statistical institutions. The atlas combined loose-sheet maps with Swedish and English explanations, diagrams and photographs, covering physical geography, population, agriculture, forestry, industry, transport and cultural life. Parliament approved a new atlas project in 1987, jointly overseen by the National Land Survey, Statistics Sweden and the Society, with central editing at Stockholm University. Publication began in 1990 with separately issued thematic books produced through digital cartography. Subsequent volumes covered environmental, social, economic and regional subjects, including public health, Skåne, Västra Götaland, Stockholm–Mälaren, languages, agricultural and forestry history, and mining. Digital publication included the PC-Atlas and CD-ROM; a 2004 review also documented linked web resources providing regional statistics and a gazetteer.
