This review examines a collective monograph devoted to the conceptual framework, thematic structure, and scientific content of the National Atlas of the Mongolian People’s Republic, a major Soviet–Mongolian cartographic project initiated in 1976. Drawing on the work of more than 300 specialists and the findings of long-term joint expeditions, the monograph is assessed as both a comprehensive synthesis of knowledge about Mongolia and an important contribution to thematic and atlas cartography. The review highlights the volume’s integrated research design, its discussion of atlas scale, layout, structure, and methods for representing spatial processes, and its broad coverage of natural and socioeconomic systems. Four chapters address geology, relief, climate, water, biological resources, landscapes, and natural regionalization; another four examine population, settlement, the territorial organization of the economy, social infrastructure, sectoral functioning, and economic linkages. Particular value is attributed to synthetic maps, including landscape, sectoral and integrated regionalization, and general economic maps, which connect component-based analysis with holistic interpretation. The reviewer concludes that the monograph combines conceptual coherence, extensive empirical material, methodological significance, and practical applicability, making it valuable to geographers, cartographers, natural and social scientists, and specialists studying Mongolia.
