P. Kraske reviews the third installment of the Swiss National Atlas, prepared under Eduard Imhof’s direction. Its maps cover hydrology, groundwater, glacier retreat during 1850–1960, commuting, tourism, population, international air traffic, and postal and news services. Tourism maps classify resorts by season duration and timing and by accommodation composition. Planned for publication in 8–10 installments, the completed atlas is to contain more than 300 multicolour maps across 86 large spreads, with a uniform scale of 1:500,000 for the main maps. It aims to cover physical conditions, historical development, and contemporary demographic, economic, and social structures. Kraske praises its combination of innovative presentation and established cartographic practice.
