This gallery brings together two Malaysian national atlases, published in 1973 and 2016. Under the shared title Atlas Kebangsaan Malaysia, they mark two moments more than four decades apart in the country’s effort to represent its territory through systematic mapping. Read side by side, the volumes offer a basis for studying what was selected, organized, and emphasized at each date, and how the national atlas changed between them. The gallery also brings the atlases together with scholarship on Malaysia’s experience of developing a national atlas, placing the maps alongside reflection on the institutions and purposes behind their production.
