A suggestion to include a few more maps in the National Atlas of India

Summary

This paper presents a critical review of the National Atlas of India with the objective of identifying thematic gaps and recommending the inclusion of additional cartographic materials. The current edition of the atlas comprises 79 maps at varying scales and 21 insets, covering a broad range of physical, demographic, economic, and cultural themes. Through a systematic evaluation of the atlas content, the study identifies underrepresented subject areas that would enhance the atlas's comprehensiveness and utility for planning, education, and research. As a result, ten new thematic maps and four illustrative sketches are proposed. These additions are designed to address emerging socio-economic and environmental contexts, including topics such as climate change vulnerability, urbanization patterns, linguistic diversity, and renewable energy potential. The suggested maps and sketches are intended to supplement existing coverage without redundancy, ensuring that the atlas remains a relevant and authoritative reference document. The paper concludes that periodic revision and expansion of national atlases are necessary to reflect dynamic national realities, and the proposed inclusions represent a substantive enhancement to India's cartographic heritage.
