Summary

This commemorative article reviews the life, scholarship, teaching, and public service of Konstantin A. Salishchev, an internationally renowned cartographer and founder of Moscow University’s school of geographical cartography, on the centenary of his birth. Drawing on major stages of his career and principal publications, it traces his early expeditionary mapping of northeastern Siberia, including the Chersky Range and the basins of the Indigirka, Kolyma, and Anadyr rivers, and examines his subsequent leadership at Moscow University. During his thirty-seven years as head of the Department of Geodesy and Cartography, Salishchev transformed it into a major center for education and research by establishing laboratories devoted to integrated mapping, aerospace methods, and cartographic automation. His theoretical and practical contributions advanced comprehensive and atlas cartography and promoted the integration of cartography with geography, Earth sciences, mathematical methods, and remote sensing. He participated in the preparation of major works such as the Great Soviet World Atlas, the World Atlas, the Physical-Geographical Atlas of the World, and the multivolume Atlas of the Oceans. His influential textbooks trained generations of specialists and gained international use. As a leader of Soviet and international cartographic organizations, including president of the International Cartographic Association, he strengthened global scholarly cooperation and the standing of Russian cartography. The article concludes that Salishchev’s institutional vision, scientific ideas, atlases, and educational legacy decisively shaped modern cartographic science and remain central to its continuing development.
