Summary

This memorial article reviews the life and achievements of Swedish glaciologist and cartographer Carl Mannerfelt (1913–2009). Drawing on his academic, professional, and institutional career, it traces his early research on Scandinavian deglaciation, his leadership at the publishing and mapping company Esselte, and his extensive service to Swedish geographical and cartographic organizations. Mannerfelt’s most significant contribution was promoting the creation of an international forum through which scholars, practitioners, mapping agencies, and companies could advance cartography. This initiative helped establish the International Cartographic Association, in which he later served as Vice-President. He also proposed the Carl Mannerfelt Gold Medal, the ICA’s highest distinction. Beyond cartography, he produced numerous writings and supported the World Wildlife Fund, advocating a broader emphasis on sustainability. His vision, organizational ability, and public service left a lasting international legacy.
