Published in 1966 by the USSR’s Main Administration of Geodesy and Cartography, Volume I of the Atlas of Antarctica (Атлас Антарктики) brought together Soviet and international observations through 1963. Numerous Soviet research institutions collaborated on its compilation. Its sections on exploration history, thematic mapping and detailed regional maps covered topography, geology, geophysics, climate, glaciology, oceanography and biological distribution, including subglacial bedrock relief and the ionosphere. Maps were accompanied by diagrams, aerial photographs, documentary reproductions and a place-name index. W. Chełchowski’s 1967 review described the Antarctic Convergence as its principal spatial boundary, with some maps extending farther north. He praised its interdisciplinary synthesis while noting limitations arising from scarce, short and asynchronous observation records and questioning the months chosen for solar-radiation maps. The associated documentation also includes Volume II, dated 1969, as explanatory notes.
