Atlas of Shanghai Municipality appeared in 1970 (Shanghai Garrison Command), 1984 (Shanghai Municipal Surveying Office), 1997 (Shanghai Scientific and Technical Publishers), and 2021 (China Cartographic Publishing House and Zhonghua Map Society). China Cartographic Publishing House issued an Expo 2010 special edition in 2010. Ma Xugen’s 1987 account describes introductory, urban, suburban-county, and historical, physical and economic maps, with explanatory texts and a place-name index; soil and some infrastructure maps were omitted for lack of data. Luo Ding’s 1998 review describes an atlas compiled by the Shanghai Municipal Atlas Compilation Committee, covering population, resources, construction, economy, social services, environment, and districts and counties. Luo credits recent base maps and statistics with improving currency and highlights street-number annotations, color-coded page references, computer-assisted cartography, and internally developed software.
