The Soviet Marine Atlas (Морской атлас) was published by naval staff institutions, with Volume I on navigation and geography appearing in 1950, Volume II on physical geography in 1953, and the two parts of Volume III on military history in 1958 and 1963. Volume II presented the World Ocean through 76 sheets containing 138 principal maps, 228 inset maps and 239 diagrams. Its subjects included maritime voyages and expeditions, seafloor relief and geology, water properties, currents, waves, tides, ice, marine organisms and ocean climate, alongside terrestrial magnetism, map projections and practical astronomy. A 1954 account of discussion by the Presidium of the Geographical Society of the USSR praised the use of primary sources, interinstitutional collaboration and multicolor printing, and recommended a supplementary handbook explaining terminology and classifications. English-language keys and evaluations and Chinese studies subsequently documented attention to the atlas outside the USSR.
