Cartographic Representation of Data in the National Atlas of India

Summary

This study examines the cartographic representation techniques employed in the socio‑economic maps of the English edition of the National Atlas of India, with a focus on 1 : 6 million thematic plates covering agriculture, livestock, industry, commerce, finance, economy and social conditions. The paper first outlines the challenges of collecting and processing vast, multi‑source statistical data, often requiring special requisitions down to sub‑district level to avoid over‑generalisation. The core of the work discusses a range of mapping methods trialled and refined for this scale. The traditional dot method, with dots placed only on arable land, proved effective for crop area and production, while proportional circles divided into coloured sectors represented industrial labour force composition across location groups. Proportional squares were introduced for urban population, offering visual variety but necessitating larger‑scale insets to resolve congestion. In livestock market and fair maps, a combination of circles and squares allowed clear distinction between market types. Semi‑circles sharing a common baseline were used to compare variables such as production capacity versus actual output or filtered versus unfiltered water supply. For highly diversified chemical and pharmaceutical data, a multi‑symbol system—sectors, circles, and squares—was carefully scaled to minimise overlap while retaining legibility. Where quantitative values were not dominant, realistic pictorial symbols and photographically reduced house‑type models were adopted for handicrafts and rural dwellings, enhancing accessibility for the general reader. The paper demonstrates that flexible, multi‑symbol approaches can convey complex spatial data effectively at small scales, and that careful placement and grouping are essential to maintain clarity while presenting an integrated picture of the nation’s socio‑economic landscape.
