Summary
This article reconstructs the collaboration between Russian-born artist-photographer Val Telberg and Anaïs Nin on the republication of House of Incest. Drawing on correspondence, production notes, publication history, and visual analysis, it describes how Telberg manipulated layered negatives on a light table to create surreal photomontages from photographs of real people and objects. Nine images appeared in the 1958 edition, translating Nin’s poetic text into floating, dreamlike spaces and establishing the visual template for subsequent editions for more than two decades. Repeated offset reproduction gradually diminished their tonal quality. The 1994 Swallow Press edition, produced from rediscovered original prints, restored their visual richness and prompted exhibitions that advanced overdue recognition of Telberg’s pioneering photography. Published shortly after his death in 1995, the edition affirmed the enduring significance of his cross-media dialogue with Nin’s writing.
