Summary

This review assesses the completed 1971 National Atlas of Sweden, a collaborative achievement of Swedish geography, cartography, and related disciplines. The atlas contains 250 maps on 151 sheets, organized into eleven thematic groups and produced at several scales. Its twenty-sixth and final installment covers geology, population and agriculture, natural monuments, and prehistory. The maps synthesize geological structure and chronology, settlement patterns, changes in cultivated land and projections for 1980, protected natural features, and approximately one thousand archaeological sites. Registers, statistical tables, aerial photographs, landscape images, and differentiated cartographic symbols supplement the maps. The review concludes that the atlas successfully integrates cartographic representation with explanatory text, offering a compact yet comprehensive reference on Sweden’s physical environment, territorial organization, demographic development, and cultural heritage.
