Summary

This review assesses the Atlas of Australian Resources, completed by the Department of National Development between 1953 and 1960. Comprising 30 map sheets with accompanying commentaries, the atlas skillfully employs symbol shape, size, and color to depict both absolute and relative values, as exemplified in the immigration, croplands, and mineral industry maps. Among transportation maps, the ports and shipping sheet is particularly notable for its dense yet clear information, while the livestock distribution map effectively integrates stock numbers with pasture types and isohyets. Although certain maps, such as health services, could be enhanced, and larger-scale regional maps of urban-industrial areas are lacking, the atlas overall merits commendation for its cartographic innovation, aesthetic quality, and timely completion.
