Summary

This commemorative article reviews the scholarly career and achievements of Soviet cartographer Konstantin A. Sališčev on his seventieth birthday in 1975. It highlights his twenty-five years as chair of geodesy and cartography at Moscow State University and his leadership in establishing a major laboratory for complex and thematic cartography. His research advanced cartographic synthesis, thematic mapping, regional atlases, and the cartographic method in scholarship and practice. Current projects included university map series, several monographs, revised textbooks, and a planned laboratory exploring orbital imagery for geographical research and mapping. The article also emphasizes his international service, including senior roles in the International Cartographic Association and the Geographical Society of the USSR, as well as numerous honors. It concludes that Sališčev made an exceptional contribution to the worldwide recognition of Soviet cartographic science.
