Parsing the Duchy: Nottingham and the Mapping of Luxembourg

Summary

The post examines the University of Nottingham’s role in producing the official Atlas du Luxembourg, published by Luxembourg’s Ministry of Education in 1971. Led by geography professor K. C. Edwards, with contributions from Catherine Delano-Smith and cartographers Keith Bowler and Carol Chambers, the atlas contains more than 140 maps covering Luxembourg’s history, physical geography, administration, population, economy, and society. Placed within the twentieth-century flourishing of national atlases, the project demonstrates how a British geography department helped shape Luxembourg’s cartographic self-image and contributed modestly to wider European integration.
