Summary
This commemorative article reviews the life, career, and scholarly legacy of Canadian geographer Norman Nicholson (1920–1984). Drawing on a biographical account and selected bibliography, it traces his wartime arrival in Canada, leadership of the federal Geographical Branch, and academic service at the University of Western Ontario. Nicholson combined extensive administrative responsibilities with a strong commitment to teaching and graduate supervision. His principal contributions concerned cartography, national atlases, political boundaries, regional geography, and geographical education. As editor of the Atlas of Canada, founder of The Canadian Geographer, and supporter of national and international geographical organizations, he helped shape the institutional foundations of Canadian geography. His publications, curriculum work, and mentorship advanced public and professional understanding of Canada’s territorial development. The article concludes that Nicholson’s exacting scholarship, educational ideals, and quiet support of colleagues and students left an enduring disciplinary legacy.
