Summary

This commemorative article reviews the life and academic legacy of Danish geographer Niels Nielsen (1893–1981), emphasizing his role in establishing geography as a modern university discipline in Denmark. Through a chronological account of his scholarship and institutional leadership, it highlights his studies of Jutland’s iron production, Icelandic physiography, sedimentation at the Skalling Laboratory, the Atlas of Denmark, and postwar tidal-flat and marsh research. Nielsen also reorganized the Royal Danish Geographical Society and its journal, strengthened research networks, and promoted the creation of the University of Copenhagen’s Geographical Institute in 1960. The article argues that his originality, pedagogical commitment, administrative capacity, and long-term vision shaped generations of geographers and benefited related disciplines. His death thus marked the end of a formative era in Danish geography.
