Summary

This review evaluates the newly published Atlas of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, jointly produced by the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and the Central Office of Geodesy and Cartography. Prepared by numerous specialists, the atlas comprises 58 large-format plates containing 433 maps and diagrams. Its physical-geography section covers Quaternary deposits, geology–relief relationships, geomorphology, landslides, karst, and soils. The human and economic sections map industrialization, industrial and agricultural changes between 1930 and 1960, regional suitability for crops, transportation networks, public health, education, sports, recreation, and culture. Although several transport maps appear partly redundant, the atlas is distinguished by its extensive information, clear commentary with English and Russian summaries, high cartographic standards, and effective use of color. It is therefore judged an authoritative and exceptionally well-presented national reference work.
