Summary
This article reports on a conference held on November 2-3, 1945, concerning the compilation of the "Atlas of Poland". The background was Poland's lack of a modern cartographic work comprehensively reflecting its geographical and economic conditions. The conference discussed the shortcomings of existing domestic and foreign atlases, established the principle of compiling the atlas at a scale of 1:2,000,000, and planned its content framework, including series of maps on physical geography, history, population, agriculture, industry, transportation, energy, and commerce/finance. It was decided that the Cartographic Bureau of the Central Office for Land Surveying would be responsible for publication, with an appeal for collaboration from scientific institutions and experts. This conference laid the foundation for the creation of the Polish national atlas.
