Summary

This commemorative essay reviews the life, scholarship, and enduring influence of Professor Shiva Prasad Chatterjee, a pioneer of modern Indian geography. Drawing on personal encounters as well as major biographical milestones, it portrays his intellectual openness, modest character, paternal concern for students, and lifelong commitment to the discipline. Trained in geology, geomorphology, and education at Banaras Hindu University, the Sorbonne, and the University of London, Chatterjee led the development of geography at Calcutta University. He founded the National Atlas Organisation, promoted socially relevant cartography, and helped produce India’s first National Atlas. He also successfully hosted the 1968 International Geographical Congress in Delhi and served as the first Indian president of the International Geographical Union. The essay emphasizes his work in developing institutions, supporting scholars, and shaping the discipline.
