First Issue of New Swedish National Atlas, 'Maps and Mapping'

Summary

This article reports on the publication and principal features of Maps and Mapping, the first volume of the new National Atlas of Sweden. It outlines the atlas program, editorial organization, and the volume’s broad coverage of cartographic history, geodesy, official map series, place-names, remote sensing, geographic databases, and future mapping. Its major innovation is an original 1:700,000 geographical map of Sweden, the first fully computer-based national map of its kind. Produced from Swedish Land Survey databases and digitized official sources, the map uses the Gauss–Krüger projection and integrates place-names, transport networks, settlements, rivers, administrative boundaries, and selected cultural features. Elevation is emphasized through eight altitude classes and computer-generated relief shading derived from a newly completed national elevation database. The volume demonstrates Sweden’s transition toward digital cartography and establishes a consistent geographical reference for subsequent thematic atlas volumes.
