Summary

The National Atlas of Germany project, spanning ten years, produced 12 printed volumes and CD-ROM editions involving over 600 scientists and more than 4,000 maps. After its completion, the atlas agency faced challenges of funding, loss of expertise, and infrastructure. This paper analyzes the challenges faced by national atlas agencies in terms of organization and finance, content, innovation, and user demands. It presents the development strategies for follow-up spin-off products of the German national atlas, such as the online journal nationalatlas aktuell and the teaching unit Germany in Maps. These products favored evolution over redevelopment using existing resources, incorporated multiple interfaces, adhered to the publication principles of combining maps, graphics, and interpretive texts, and emphasized continuous user feedback. Ultimately, these spin-offs were integrated into the bilingual web portal nationalatlas.de to maintain corporate identity and expand the user base.
