Cartography
Картография
Summary
The surviving material describes the second revised and expanded edition of Konstantin Alekseevich Salishchev’s university textbook Cartography (Moscow: Vysshaya Shkola, 1971; 248 pages, 112 illustrations). It comprises publication details, an annotation, a preface, a contents list, and portions of the index; the chapter texts are missing. Salishchev defines the textbook’s aim as teaching students to understand, analyze, and use maps and introducing map production processes. He stresses that laboratory classes require appropriate maps and atlases. The contents list covers mathematical foundations, cartographic symbols and representation methods, geographical names, generalization, map and atlas classification, map analysis and evaluation, compilation, publication, automation, and the use of maps to investigate spatial distributions, relationships, change, and prediction. It concludes with a historical overview of cartography. Topographic maps receive brief treatment because they belong to a separate topography course. According to the preface, this edition was substantially revised to reflect contemporary developments in cartographic theory and practice.
