Summary

The National Atlas of the United States project, recommended by a National Academy of Sciences committee, is to be produced by a federal mapping agency, preferably the Geological Survey. Previously considered by the Department of State and the American Geographical Society, the project has been officially accepted, with a 'National Atlas Project' established in the Survey's Washington, D.C. office. Arch C. Gerlach, from the Library of Congress Map Division, has been appointed Director for two years, bringing prior experience from the Office of Strategic Services and the State Department.
