Summary

This review assesses the revised English edition of the Atlas of Israel, originally published in Hebrew between 1956 and 1964. Covering cartography, physical geography, human and economic geography, and history, the volume makes one of the world’s most detailed national atlases accessible to a wider readership. Although some maps were omitted, its broad thematic design remains, with particular emphasis on Jewish history and the Jewish state. Notably, many agricultural and social maps incorporate territories occupied since 1967, drawing on aerial imagery, Jordanian statistics, and subsequent surveys. The atlas thus functions partly as documentation of Palestine as a whole, while largely avoiding explicit positions on disputed political boundaries.
