Summary
The article reports on the August 1958 Moscow meeting of the International Geographical Union’s Commission on National Atlases. Delegates reviewed national atlas projects and commissioned studies, including Hungary’s preliminary atlas plan, and debated the purposes, contents, and improvement of such works. The Commission identified harmonization of atlas content as its principal objective, thereby facilitating international comparative research and laying foundations for a future world atlas. It also initiated an analytical monograph, a specialized bibliography, an atlas exhibition, research on production technology, and a permanent secretariat at Moscow University. Hungary’s representative was subsequently elected as the Commission’s tenth member. Beyond these institutional outcomes, the meeting strengthened Hungary’s geographical and cartographic relations, particularly with Soviet scholars, and led to a Budapest working group that would provide systematic coverage of Hungarian scholarship. The conference thus significantly advanced international cooperation and atlas standardization.
