Four-Color Printing of the Atlas of Togo

Unknown · 1995

This paper presents the cartographic production of the *Atlas of Togo*, a large-scale comprehensive national development atlas commissioned by UNESCO and comprising 88 maps and 91 text descriptions across 17 thematic categories. Because the original manuscripts supplied by ITC contained numerous deficiencies—incomplete design, missing legends, uneven linework, and uncorrected errors—the Chinese printing team undertook supplementary compilation and full redrafting of all sheets to guarantee quality. Editorial refinements were made to enhance scientific rigor and aesthetic appeal, including border adjustments, consistent reuse of three-version base maps, and deliberate placement of titles and legends while optimizing layouts for four‑color printing. In prepress, a domestic CPW computer typesetting system replaced manual phototypesetting for text annotation, and a CP‑341 electronic color scanner was used to generate halftone films with specified dot percentages and screen angles. Yellow, magenta, cyan, and black inks were overprinted with controlled gradations, and dot patterns were flexibly employed as supplementary design elements to reduce masking steps and improve efficiency. The complete atlas was finished within six months. UNESCO experts evaluated the redrafting quality, plate‑making, and binding as excellent, describing the final product as rich in content, vivid in color, clearly layered, and dignified in appearance, reaching first‑class international quality. This project demonstrates that by fully exploiting existing equipment and adopting innovative reproduction techniques, high‑quality atlas production can be achieved even with deficient source materials, thereby enhancing the international reputation of national cartographic printing.
