National Atlas LX Anniversary: first in digital format and genuinely Cuban

This paper compiles a series of recent Cuban media reports covering cultural, scientific, and historical dimensions of the 61st anniversary of the Revolution. The purpose is to present a multifaceted overview of commemorative activities, a landmark cartographic publication, and historical reflections on revolutionary commitment. Methodologically, the text draws on official announcements, expert interviews, and archival newspaper excerpts to construct a coherent narrative of national celebration and progress. Key findings include the Ministry of Culture's organization of concerts, dances, and other artistic events to mark the anniversary and New Year; the presentation of the new National Atlas of Cuba LX Anniversary, a fully digital and genuinely Cuban product developed by over 300 specialists from 65 institutions under the guidance of the Institute of Tropical Geography; and the Atlas’s innovative inclusion of previously unrepresented themes such as rock art, protected areas, climate change, and demographic dynamics. Additionally, the paper revisits a historic moment in December 1959 when Fidel Castro signed the first agrarian reform land titles in Baracoa, symbolically reversing colonial dispossession, and when over forty prominent intellectuals signed a declaration pledging to join the revolutionary militias in defense of the nation. A practical notice on holiday newspaper distribution adjustments is also included. The conclusions underscore the integration of scientific innovation, cultural expression, and historical memory as pillars of Cuba’s national project, with the Atlas representing a milestone in Cuban cartography and a living document capable of continuous updating and eventual expansion to mobile applications, online services, and potential print editions for educational distribution.
The Landscape Maps of the National Atlas of Cuba LX Anniversary

The purpose of the present work is to set out the fundamental ideas underlying the preparation of the three maps that make up the Landscapes section of the National Atlas of Cuba LX Anniversary, published in 2019. The Landscapes theme is a subsection of the Nature section, presenting the following maps of Cuba: Anthroponatural Landscape, Cultural Landscape, and Geographical Regionalization, all at a scale of 1:1,000,000. Rather than the characteristics of the natural, economic, social, and cultural components, the authors aim to highlight the systemic interrelation within them, which manifests itself in specific spatial patterns, with features of individuality and uniqueness.
The national atlas of Cuba ‘LX anniversary’. Toward a living atlas

This scientific note describes the development of the National Atlas of Cuba “LX Anniversary,” a digital geographic‑cartographic work designed as a “living atlas.” Led by the Institute of Tropical Geography (IGT) in collaboration with Geocuba I.C., CITMATEL, the University of Havana, and numerous other national entities, the atlas is the first of its kind produced entirely by Cuban institutions and specialists. Building on the heritage of the 1970, 1979, and 1989 atlases, the new atlas is structured into six thematic sections (General and Reference Maps, Nature, Population, Economy, Strategic Topics, and History). The project follows a six‑stage methodology: organizational design; creation of digital map prototypes using GIS (EPSG 4326); conversion of maps to HTML format via TileMill and Leaflet; assembly of the multimedia product; development of a web geoportal; and development of a mobile application (APK). Version 1.0 of the multimedia was released in 2019, containing 230 maps together with thematic texts, photographs, tables, and graphs. Version 1.1, currently being finalized, expands content and interactivity. The final platform will provide online services and mobile access, enabling systematic, rapid, and economical updates. The atlas synthesizes scientific results from national and international projects and serves as a tool for territorial planning, environmental management, education, and decision‑making. This initiative marks a pivotal shift in Cuban cartography from printed atlases to a dynamic, continuously updated digital framework, fostering accessibility and institutional integration.
